Underground Atlanta tries to bounce back

By Chris Chandler

Atlanta, GA —

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed says he's talking to a couple of prospective new tenants that could help turn Underground Atlanta around.

The four-decade old development draws about five-million visitors a year; more than four times the World of Coke nearby, but many Atlantans won't go within a mile of the place, citing either lack of interest or lack of security.

Mayor Reed tells the AJC he's in talks with a pair of prospective retail “anchor tenants,” and he's got a 10 year plan that would turn Underground into an arts-and-culture center.

Analysts believe moving the World of Coke to its new location a few years ago may have cost Underground Atlanta 800,000 visitors a year.
