This is a timeline of important events in connection with the alleged affair between former CIA Director David Petraeus and his biographer Paula Broadwell.
2006: Paula Broadwell meets Patraeus at a function at Harvard, where she is a graduate student.
2007: Senate confirms Petraeus as commanding general for U.S. troops in Iraq.
2008: Broadwell tells Patraeus that she wants to conduct a case study on his leadership.
2010: Patraeus named leader of Afghanistan war. Broadwell would begin visiting him and studying in Afghanistan
Aug. 2011: Petraeus retires from U.S. Army after nearly 40 years in service
Sept. 2011: Petraeus named Director of CIA, sworn in with his wife, Holly, by his side.
Nov. 2011: Petraeus and Broadwell begin extramarital affair, according to retired Army Col. Steve Boylan.
Jan. 24, 2012: Broadwell’s biography titled “All In: The Education of Gen. David Petraeus” is published.
Jan. 20, 2012: In an interview with her hometown paper, the Bismarck Tribune, Broadwell describes Petraeus as an inspirational figure who always takes care of his subordinates.
May 2012: Tampa socialite, Jill Kelley, receives harassing emails, reports say. The FBI begins investigation.
July 2012: Affair between Broadwell and Petraus ends, according to Steve Boylan, friend of Petraeus.
Oct. 21, 2012: Federal investigators interview Broadwell.
Oct. 26, 2012: Broadwell says CIA was holding Libyan prisoner at Benghazi consulate at speaking engagement in Denver
Oct. 27, 2012: FBI notifies House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of affair
Oct. 28, 2012: Federal investigators interview Petraeus.
Nov. 6, 2012: As Americans cast their ballots on Election Day, the Justice Department informs Director of National Intelligence James Clapper of the investigation. Clapper calls Petraeus and urges him to resign.
Nov. 7, 2012: The White House is first notified about the affair. Petraeus turns 60 on same day.
Nov. 8, 2012: Petraeus meets with President Barack Obama and offers his resignation. Obama does not immediately accept it.
Nov. 9, 2012: Obama accepts Petraeus’ resignation. Broadwell is publicly identified.
Nov. 10, 2012: Broadwell's book, ranked 76,792 on Amazon the day before, jumps to 111.
Nov. 11, 2012: News media identifies the woman who made original complaint to FBI as Jill Kelley.
Nov. 13, 2012: Pentagon officials said U.S. Commander in Afghanistan Gen. John Allen is under investigation for possible inappropriate emails to Kelley
Nov. 14, 2012: For the first time since the Paula Broadwell scandal broke, cameras have caught glimpses of her at her brother's house in Washington, D.C.
