A time for rememberance, picnics and running red lights

By Marcy Williams

Washington, DC —

Are you heading out of town this holiday weekend?  Be warned: running a red light is more common over the Memorial Day holiday weekend than a typical weekend.

David Kelly, president of the National Coalition for Safer Roads, tells WSB, "It is 27 percent more likely someone is going to run a red light this weekend than just a normal weekend."

Kelly assumes red light violations are more common over Memorial Day because Americans are anxious to start the summer vacation season, but that recklessness costs lives.  Kelly estimates 700 people are killed each year by a red light scofflaw.

"It is not the person running the red light.  Two/thirds of the time, it is an innocent victim that is struck by the person who runs the red light," Kelly says.

While Kelly supports use of red light cameras, when applicable, he stresses driver safety.

"We have forgotten the number one responsibility when we're driving a car...is to get to where you're going safely," he tells WSB.
