Atlanta —
No other Braves player will wear jersey number 29. The Atlanta Braves plan to induct pitcher John Smoltz into the Braves Hall of Fame on Friday, April 20th, and retire his number.
Smoltz rejoins part of the rotation that powered Atlanta through the early 90s; the Braves have already retired the numbers of Greg Maddux (31) and Tom Glavine (47).
"We all knew it was going to come to an end some day," Smoltz tells News/Talk WSB, "but we sure enjoyed the fruits of the 10 years we had together."
Smoltz spent 20 seasons in a Braves uniform. He credits former manager Bobby Cox with his long tenure.
"Bobby was an essential reason that I made a choice every time to stay in Atlanta," says Smoltz. "That 1991 season, my whole fate could have changed in ways that I'll never know had he just given in to the pressures of getting me out of the rotation."
Smoltz is the only pitcher in Major League history with at least 200 wins and 150 saves, and has the most strikeouts in postseason history with 199. In 466 starts for the Braves, Smoltz compiled a 210-147 record with a 3.26 ERA.
Smoltz split his final Major League season between Boston and St. Louis in 2009.
