Six people were killed in wrecks statewide over the 102-hour New Year’s holiday travel period, the Georgia State Patrol said Tuesday.
That total is less than half the number killed over a shorter holiday weekend last New Year’s. A year ago, 13 people died in a 78-hour holiday travel period.
This year’s fatal wrecks were investigated by police in Cobb County, Macon and Perry, and by State Patrol posts in Athens, Madison and Valdosta.
The State Patrol investigated a total of 585 wrecks with 266 injures during this year’s counting period, which began at 6 p.m. Friday and ended at midnight Tuesday.
Troopers arrested 321 motorists for driving under the influence over the weekend, according to the State Patrol. Last year, troopers arrested 262 people for impaired driving.
The State Patrol said 17 people were killed over the recent 102-hour Christmas holiday period.
