A Gwinnett school resource officer is expected to survive his injuries after being hit by a car outside Meadowcreek High School. It started with a lunchroom brawl that prompted the school resource officer to chase after three students involved the fight.
“This SRO actually went off campus across the street and was looking for these students when he was struck by a vehicle,” says Gwinnett School spokesperson Sloan Roach.
The school resource officer, identified as 53-year-old Chuck McCallum, suffered non–life threatening injuries when he was hit by another student in a car. That student, 17-year-old Jarvis Ruff, left the scene and then crashed a short distance away, according to police.
"It (the car) went thru the sign for the apartments, down a hill and the vehicle actually caught fire at the bottom of the hill," says Gwinnett Police Corporal Jake Smith.
He says Ruff wasn’t hurt, but faces several charges including hit and run, driving without a license, speeding, and reckless conduct.
Roach says school officials are also trying to identify all of the students involved in the original fight.
