Scam hits high school students

Gwinnett County, GA —

In Gwinnett County, authorities say scammers targeted high school students with promises of phony scholarships.

Adrian Davis is in jail, accused of telling student-athletes he could help pave the way toward full scholarships.

"He basically said that he takes care of everything, all we had to do is provide him the information," parent Tony McCune tells Channel 2 Action News.

But when McCune called the colleges the suspect claimed were interested in his daughter...they never heard of her.

Police now say they believe Davis may have been scamming families across the southeast, for as much as $3,000 per student.  They're investigating cases as far away as Texas.

Some of Davis' former employees also complain they never got money he owed them.  It was one of these disgruntled workers who was among first to tip police to the scheme.

Since then, all 28 of Davis' former employees have quit and are cooperating with investigators.
