Public hearing on tap for HOT lane extension

HOT Lanes
The Georgia Department of Transportation wants to expand on the controversial Interstate 85 HOT lane, but drivers have had mixed reactions.

Duluth, GA —

Commuters get to weigh in on extending toll lanes through Gwinnett County.

The D.O.T. seeks public input on adding ten miles of high-occupancy toll lanes from Old Peachtree to Hamilton Mill.  Instead of converting existing lanes, the Department of Transportation would build out new lanes.

"This is new pavement, new construction, new lanes to alleviate congestion in an area that gets very congested," WSB's Captain Herb Emory points out.

The current H.O.T. lanes from Chamblee-Tucker to Old Peachtree got off to a rocky start but have grown on commuters, according to Malika Wilkins of the State Road and Tollway Authority.

"Every month, we still see more usage in the lanes," Wilkins states.  "We haven't leveled off quite yet."

Today's public hearing runs from 4pm-7pm at the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce in Duluth.  There will be another hearing next Thursday at the Braselton Police and Municipal Court Complex.
