Proposal fails for Walmart in Buckhead

Atlanta —

More than half the Atlanta City Council voted to approve a new Walmart in Buckhead, but the proposal still didn't pass.

"I'm disappointed," says developer Jeff Fuqua, "[but] it's not over yet."

The council voted on Monday, 7-6, in favor of rezoning an area near Buckhead that would allow Fuqua's company to move forward with a $90-million mixed-use development. That vote falls short of the three-fifths majority needed to approve the plan.

The development would include residential space and a Walmart, which supporters say would bring more jobs to the area. Many who live in the area, though, are opposed to the idea.
