Police shoot family's dog in Buford

A Buford family is mourning the loss of their dog who was shot by two Gwinnett County police officers this week.

Keren Rios says the family was in the process of moving into the rental home on Jimmy Dodd Road and put their two dogs in a detached garage before leaving to make another trip.

A neighbor, believing the home to still be vacant, called police suspecting someone was breaking into the property.

According to the police report, an officer entered the garage and was bitten in the thigh by the pitbull named Rocky.  He fired two shots and a second officer fired another round.  Gwinnett Animal Control was called and took Rocky, who died from his injuries, along with a second dog named Scrappy.

Rios returned a few hours later to find both dogs missing and blood in the garage.

The police report says the officer did not suffer any puncture wounds to his skin but did have holes in his pants. A note was left behind saying Animal Control had the animals.

It wasn't until Rios went to Gwinnett's temporary animal shelter that she learned what had happened.

"I feel so bad because they're like 'you lost your dog, that's it'; plus they didn't even have a warrant to come into my house," she tells WSB's Sandra Parrish.

Rios says the officers didn't call her land lord, whose name was listed on a sign out front, until after the shooting.

A spokesperson for Gwinnett Police says there is no current internal affairs investigation underway and the case has yet to be assigned to a detective.
