CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. —

It is something that happens in the movies, but it doesn’t happen often in real life.

Clayton County Police say a woman walked into Southern Regional Medical Center in Riverdale Wednesday morning and abducted a 2-day-old baby girl from her mother’s arms in their hospital room.

19-year-old Naquelle Ballard, of Morrow, pretended to be a hospital worker and took the newborn.

"An alarm sounded when the suspect tried to walk off with the infant," said Amanda Bartlett, spokesperson for Southern Region Medical Center.

Ballard was then confronted by two hospital employees. She left the hospital without the baby and drove off. Witnesses wrote down Ballard’s tag number and she was later stopped by police in Lake City.  Police Officer Phong Nguyen says Ballard faces charges of kidnapping and false imprisonment. Nguyen says additional charges are possible.

"I think that's crazy," expectant mom Anden Christman told Channel 2 Action News.  "I've never heard of anybody actually doing that, I've just seen it on TV."

Ballard’s twitter account shows she was bragging about being pregnant.

Among the things written on the account: "I'm putting childish things away cause I got a baby on the way."

She also tweeted, "This pregnancy is making my nerves bad. I need a blunt."

The hospital recently made $180,000 in security upgrades, and employees in the newborn unit are trained for emergencies.

"Everything came together. The baby never left the building and she is doing fine," Bartlett said.

Ballard makes her first court appearance this afternoon.

WSB's Richard Sangster reports there have been about 100 baby snatchings in the U.S. since 1982.
