A shooting took place on the campus of a midtown Atlanta high school Wednesday morning, according to city police.

“(It) appears (a) student has a self-inflicted wound to the thigh,” Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones told Channel 2 Action News.

The injured student was taken to Grady Hospital for treatment, Atlanta Public School officials said on Twitter. Police later identified the student as  17-year-old Morgan Tukes. Channel 2's Ryan Young spoke to another student at the school who said the girl was running through the hallway asking for help as she bled.

“Right now, my information is that it was non-life-threatening,” Atlanta police spokesman Carlos Campos told Young.

Police said the shooting happened outside the school building around 9:40 a.m., and officers recovered the handgun involved. Authorities do not believe there other guns or suspects involved.

Tukes has been charged with carrying a  weapon in school safety zone, reckless conduct, disrupting public school and possession of  pistol by a  minor.

She is expected to make a court appearance Thursday morning.
