Paulding man killed by cops had pepper spray

By Jennifer Griffies

Paulding County, GA —

A man who was shot to death in his home in Hiram,on Wednesday by police, apparently was armed with pepper spray, not a gun.

Corporal Ashley Henson tells WSB they were trying to serve a narcotics warrant at 60-year-old Danny Hammett's home, on Nebo Road, but it was difficult to see.

"When the agents entered the residence, the front porch of the residence had blacked out windows so, it was very dark in there and it was very difficult to see.  None of the lights were on," said Henson.

Henson says when they met Hammett in the hallway, they repeatedly asked him to show his hands and he eventually raised them, but in a threatening manner.

"He had a black, shiny object in his hands and at that point officers again explained to him and urged him to drop whatever was in his hands.  He did not and at that point, officers fired on him, fatally wounding him," said Henson.

The investigation revealed that the object was not a gun, but a can of pepper spray.

"The subsequent search revealed that there was evidence of narcotics trafficking in the residence and it did solidify the fact of why they were there," said Henson.

Authorities had been investigating the house for some time.  Charges are pending.
