A relative of a convicted cop killer was supposed to testifiy about mental illness in their family.
Instead, the jury got a first-hand demonstration.
Juanita Graves is the aunt of William Woodard, a man recently convicted of murdering two DeKalb County police officers in 2008.
During the penalty phase of Woodard's trial, Graves was scheduled to testify about her psychological problems, including how she has stabbed people and used crack-cocaine in the past.
But when she was asked about her mental health history she lost it.
"NO! NO! NO! NO!," Graves screamed in front of the jurors.
The outburst was so loud that deputies rushed to the witness stand and escorted Graves from the courtroom. The jury quickly went back into the jury room, but the incident was already over.
Woodard was convicted last week of murdering Officer Eric Barker and Ricky Bryant on the night of January 15, 2008. The two were working off-duty but in uniform at the Victory Crossing Apartments, when they smelled marijuana. They traced it to the car Woodard was in and, during the ensuing scuffle, both Barker and Bryant were shot and killed.
Each man left behind a wife and four children.
The defense portion of the penalty phase is underway. Jurors could get the case again by the end of the week. Then, they will have to decide whether to sentence Woodard to life in prison or death.
