Norcross, GA —
Norcross snuffs out a citywide tobacco ban.
The city council approved the ban on all tobacco use in May; it was due to take effect Monday, July 2nd. The tobacco ban covered all city property including sidewalks and parking lots. The ordinance drew immediate protest.
Residents and business owners complained of "Big Brother" interference. Businesses also expressed fear the ordinance would irritate customers and drive them away.
The council responded, rescinding the ban at Monday's meeting. It may be reintroduced in some form at a later date.
