Neighborhood fighting copper thieves

Atlanta —

Neighbors are galvanizing to fight copper thieves in Northwest Atlanta.

For more than a week, residents in the Kevin Heights neighborhood tell Channel 2 Action News that copper thieves have been stripping light poles, which has cut out street lights and knocked out internet and phone service for thousands.

Residents like Margaret Bivens says the thieves have struck repeatedly.

"I had lights, but then I didn't have a phone.  Then they came back and did it again," says Bivens.

Kevin Heights Neighborhood President, James Tyler, says residents are organizing and holding meetings to motivate the community to come together to stop the thefts and power outages.

"All these things in combination have us greatly concerned about the safety of our community," says Tyler.

The residents say they need more street lights, sidewalks and security cameras.

The neighborhood group is planning their next meeting for Sat., Dec. 8, at the Collier Heights Library, at 12 p.m.
