More DDS problems

Norcross, GA —

Yet another wrinkle in the continuing saga of those new Georgia drivers' license rules; naturalized citizens are now reporting problems.

One Gwinnett County woman, an immigrant from Ireland who moved to Georgia in 1980 says she's found it nearly impossible to get her license renewed.

69-year old Mary Carpenter tells Channel 2 Action News she brought her social security card, two utility bills, her birth certificate, her decades-old marriage license, and her naturalization papers with her to the DDS office in Norcross.

But officials told her they had no way to verify her citizenship, and must consult with Washington, D.C. before her license can be renewed.

"I interpreted it to mean I was 'illegal'", Carpenter complains.  "If it is denied they will terminate my drivers' license immediately."

The Department of Drivers Services says it can't comment on the situation.

By the way, the wait at that Norcross office Tuesday was reported at 6 1/2 hours.
