Atlanta, Ga. —
You're going to be seeing a lot more police on the streets of Atlanta in the coming weeks thanks to federal money.
The Atlanta Police Department has received $500,000 for crime prevention, and that money will go towards adding patrols in sections of the city.
"We asked ourselves 'Where does it make the most sense to flood these areas with police officers?'" says Carlos Campos with the APD.
After reviewing crime data the department decided on four locations for added patrols, meant to suppress crime, more than just make arrests.
"The Atlanta University Center, the Peachtree Street corridor, from midtown to Buckhead," Campos tells WSB, "the West End Mall area and then right in the core of the city, the old Fourth Ward, Inman and Candler Parks. This includes Auburn Avenue, Boulevard and Euclid."
Campos says the half million dollars will go towards paying overtime for the extra patrol officers and not to just pay for cops already on the beat.
"The overtime detail will augment, not replace, the Department’s 24-hour presence throughout the City of Atlanta," he says.
The department will also be deploying officers for traffic enforcement and code enforcement.
The crime suppression operation will run for 60 days, until October 1.
