What exactly are Video Lottery Terminals?

They carry names like Kingdom of Gold, Greenback Attack, Kitty Glitter and Pass the Buck.  If they sound like scratch-off games that you'd buy at a convenience store, that's because, in a lot of ways, they are.

They're no different than the regular lottery," says Sutor.  "The regular lottery you have 3 or 4 or 5 different areas you have to scratch-off to get a combination to win.  With VLT's you have 3 or 4 or 5 different areas where you have to also get a combination."

Most VLT's operate like video slot machines, with one big difference.  When a person wins on a VLT, most take the player to a bonus game, which uses touch screen technology.  The player plays a random touch screen game, which offers the possibility of a bigger payout.

Some VLT's also offer team opportunities, when two players can compete against two others, or all four can play against the machine.
