Man hit by car; to get ticket for jaywalking

Marietta, GA —

A Marietta man who was hit by a car will leave the hospital with more than a cast. He will also have a ticket to worry about after jaywalking on a deadly stretch of Powder Springs Street last Friday night.

Wilder Vicente-Vicente crossed against the light at Powder Springs and Chestnut Hill Friday night and was hit by car, according to Marietta Police. While he is now listed in good condition, he won’t leave the hospital without a ticket for jaywalking.

It is an area notorious for pedestrian accidents, said Marietta Police Officer David Baldwin. While statistics were not readily available, he said there have been a number of fatalities there over the past decade, prompting a number of law enforcement and civic initiatives aimed at cutting the number of accidents between pedestrians and motor vehicles.

Baldwin pointed to a large number of businesses that are situated in such a way that almost invites trouble. There is a check-cashing store at the intersection. Nearby, a liquor store and a convenience store that sells beer and wine. Just up the street are nightclubs and fast-food restaurants. Add it all up and you have a recipe for high-intensity foot traffic in an area where visibility is limited – especially at night, Baldwin said.

“Because of this mixture, it leads to a lot of pedestrians being hit by vehicles in that area,” he explained.

Baldwin said Marietta Police have stepped up enforcement and signage in the area for years. The city has added more lights. But jaywalking, he admitted, remains a deadly problem in search of a real solution.
