Live power lines trap man in truck

By Pete Combs

Buchanan, GA —

Harrowing moments for a Buchanan man caught by Monday's storms. WSB’s Pete Combs reports the man was trapped inside his truck for two hours… knowing that any attempt to escape could kill him.

David Powell was driving along Georgia 120 near Buchanan talking on the phone with his brother Randy, when he began to yell.

“He was all freaked out,” Randy Powell recounted as he stood next to his brother’s truck, marveling at the hole burned in the hood by the arcing wires. “He said, ‘Sparks are flying everywhere! Wires are down everywhere! I’m being electrocuted!’”

The storm had knocked a tree into power lines, which had fallen into the path of David’s truck, which was headed west on Georgia 120. The wires surrounded the truck – blocking the doors on both sides.

Randy called 911 for help and raced to the scene from his office in Ashford-Dunwoody. Two hours later, he arrived just in time to see David being rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. Randy said he talked to his brother later in the evening. Although badly shaken, David said he was recovering and would be okay.
