Kennesaw gun law gets worldwide attention

Kennesaw, GA —

As the gun control debate continues around the United States, the city of Kennesaw is drawing worldwide attention for its law requiring every household to own a firearm.

Police have given interviews to reporters from Japan, France, Britain, and Russia.

"Most of the attention is coming from international media right now," Mayor Mark Mathews tells Channel 2 Action News.

And some residents say they attention can't be bad.  "I think it may keep some criminals away," says one.

"Everybody else knows about it so they don't come here," says another Kennesaw resident.

The law has been in effect since the 1980s, but city officials say it isn't enforced.  It was enacted in response to a gun ban in an Illinois town.

The mayor says he gets some wild questions about the law, like whether the city actually issues weapons to its citizens.  That's a no.

Mayor Mathews says he tries to steer those conversations onto other subjects, like the incoming Kennesaw State football team.
