The son of former Gwinnett County Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, who already faces time in federal prison for a bribery and drug conviction, has been arrested for assaulting his estranged wife.

John Fanning, who's been on house arrest with an ankle monitor until he has to report to prison, is accused of going to the home of Lesley Fanning and hitting her with a table and table leg.

Law enforcement responded to a 911 call around 7 a.m. on Friday at the home on Bold Springs Road.

Deputy Chief Mike Boyd with the Gwinnett Sheriff's Department says Fanning also physically prevented his wife from calling 911 or being allowed to leave. He says Fanning then ran into some woods behind the house.

"Units conducted a search of the wooded area and he was found shortly thereafter hiding in a bushy area," Boyd tells WSB's Sandra Parrish.

Fanning was immediately transported to the Gwinnett County Jail and charged with aggravated assault, false imprisonment, obstruction of a 911 call and cruelty to a child in the 3rd degree, because the assault happened in the presence of the couple's children.

Lesley Fanning was arrested last month after deputies say she carried a gun into the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center.  She was on her way to a divorce hearing.

The couple had been involved in a bitter custody battle before Fanning admitted to his part in the bribery scandal that involved his mother and business associate Skip Cain.

Fanning and Cain both received close to five years in prison for their part, and his mother, former Gwinnett County Commissioner, Shirley Lasseter, received 33 months.
