Atlanta police said they are working a homicide investigation where an infant died from an apparent drug overdose.

Detectives tell Channel 2's Ryan Young they working hard to find out how the drugs got into the child's system.

"We first got involved when we got a call on Oct. 2 of the child being unresponsive," Lt. Paul Guerrucci with the Atlanta Police Department said.

Investigator said a 911 call first alerted EMS and police that something had gone wrong inside a Spark Street apartment complex in southwest Atlanta. When detectives and emergency crews arrived, they said it was too late for the 11-month-old boy.

"Based on the information that we received from them, the child appears to have died from an overdose of a controlled substance. So, since that point we have opened up a homicide investigation and are actively working that case," Guerruci said.

It took several weeks for all the toxicology results to come back. But investigators at the Fulton County Medical Examiner Office confirmed to police that the baby boy died of a drug overdose.

Investigators would not elaborate on the drug that was found in the boy's system, only to say it contained a high amount of opium.

Investigators are now interviewing anyone who came in contact with the baby boy.

"We're going to have to talk to anybody who was around the child, or had custody of the child, or cared for the child leading up to the events that caused the child's death," Guerruci said.

No one in the neighborhood wanted to talk about the boy's death on camera, but neighbors told Young they were aware of the investigation and that they saw the smiling boy just before his death.

The boy would have turned 1-year-old on Nov. 24.
