Gwinnett County —

Residents who live in Gwinnett County’s District 1 will no longer be without a commissioner.

Jace Brooks, who won both the special election to fill Shirley Lasseter’s unexpired term and the new four-year term in January, is being sworn in Monday.

Lasseter resigned her seat just before pleading guilty to accepting bribes from an undercover agent.

“I was heartbroken at first and I think that changed to frustration and a little bit of anger,” says Brooks of Lasseter’s guilty plea.

He says restoring trust will be among his top priorities as he takes over the seat.

“It’s going to be tough to rebuild that trust and it’s not going to happen overnight,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.

Brooks, who works as a financial planner, served on the Suwanee City Council nearly ten years.

“I think I was elected because people see me as a person of integrity… they want someone they can trust,” he says.

Lasseter was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison.  Her son, John Fanning, and business associate, Carl “Skip” Cain, will be sentenced on bribery as well as drug trafficking charges Tuesday.
