Georgia agency probes daycare after children wander away

After two 3-year-olds wandered away from a Buford daycare and came near a roadway, a state agency says it has launched an investigation into Lanier Academy.

“It has to do with supervision, and that’s really all I can say at this point until we’re able to talk to some teachers and folks that were involved, but we are investigating,” Reg Griffin, chief communications officer for the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning, told the Gainesville Times.

Lanier Academy would only say it is complying with state agencies, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Hillary Earls told Channel 2 that her daughter, Grace, and another 3-year-old girl were able to climb a fence Thursday at the daycare, which is near Lanier Islands Parkway.

“It could have been awful for my daughter and that other little girl. I just can’t explain how terrifying it was,” Earls said.

Earls said the girls had time to wander all the way to the highway, Channel 2 reported. Her daughter stopped in the parking lot, but the other girl kept going.

A passerby saw the child near the road and called the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, the Times reported.
