Residents of an East Point apartment complex are panicked after receiving notice to vacate the condemned buildings.

Orange notices to vacate were stapled to doors of the Washington Arms apartments Wednesday morning. The city said the buildings were condemned because they have no heat.

Netty Wise, 85, told Channel 2’s Eric Philips that she uses a space heater or an open oven to keep warm. Wise said she just paid her rent for the month when she got the notice, and now she doesn’t know what she is going to do.

The city said it's a hazard for residents to use space heaters and open ovens.

One resident told Philips she has lived in the apartments for four years without heat.

Philips called the apartment management company, which took over last month, but has not heard back.

Residents said they are hoping they can at least get this month’s rent back to help them with the move.
