Drivers try to make sense of new diverging diamond interchange

A new diverging diamond interchange brings big change to the Jimmy Carter Boulevard Bridge over I-85 in Gwinnett County.

The diverging diamond interchange offer free-flowing ramps off Interstate 85 onto Jimmy Carter Boulevard Bridge, shifting traffic to the left side of the bridge instead of the right.

"I think that's why they had police up there trying to help things out," commuter Jake Rall said. "I'm sure some people were probably getting confused."

Traffic engineers insist the new intersection will reduce backups, but there might be a learning curve for drivers.

"We'll be out on-site tomorrow morning for rush hour," said Alan Chapman with the DOT. "We have police officers stationed at both ends of the bridge. It is a learning process for drivers. So over the first couple of weeks we plan to monitor it very closely."

Veterans of the commute near the Jimmy Carter Boulevard Bridge say the diamond already works over Interstate 85 at Pleasant Hill Road, and they say in time residents will get used to driving on the wrong side of the road.

Officials say it won't take long for commuters to get the hang of things, and they'll like the quicker driver over the bridge.
