A school crossing guard was being treated at North Fulton Medical Center after she was struck by a car escorting students across busy East Cherokee Drive Wednesday morning.

The frost was thick on the windshield of 18-year-old Alexander Hopkins’ car when he turned onto East Cherokee Drive, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. “He just simply couldn’t see and struck the crossing guard at Hickory Flats Elementary School,” said Lt. Jay Baker. It happened in front of horrified students and teachers. Michelle Hale, 42, was rushed to North Fulton Medical Center with a leg injury, Baker said. However, her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening and Baker said the popular crossing guard should be back on the job soon after the first of the year. As for Hopkins, Baker said he received a ticket and a lesson learned. “Don’t pull out into traffic until you can clearly see out of your entire windshield,” he warned.
