College Football Hall of Fame loses funding

ATLANTA —

What's next for the proposed move to Atlanta for the College Football Hall of Fame?

Two years ago, the Georgia General Assembly approved money to relocate the hall from South Bend, Indiana.  However, the construction of the building has been delayed because of lack of fundraising.

And now this:  The budget writers of the Georgia House have removed $10 million in bond money which had previously been approved for the hall.

It's all part of a $19.2 billion spending plan for the upcoming year. However, all is not lost for the proposed facility, as funding could be considered again when building plans are firmed up.

The budget for 2013 spends more than $375 million on new college construction projects; which is $85 million more than the previous budget.  Kennesaw State will get $6.5 million of infrastructure expansion and Lanier Technical's Barrow County campus will get $16 million for a new building.

Other items in the proposed budget include $750,000 for a state history museum to be housed at the the former World of Coca-Cola building in Five Points, $12.5 million to purchase property for a North Fulton campus of Gwinnett Technical College, $3 million for raises for law enforcement staffers, $10 million for local road projects and $250,000 to upgrade office technology for the former State Ethics Commission.

The budget plan was passed Monday by the House Appropriations Committee and will be put to a vote on Wednesday.
