Church blocks alcohol sales at Walmart

By Richard Sangster

Walmart loses its fight with a Cobb County church over beer and wine sales.

A county ordinance prevents alcohol sales within 600-feet of a church. The store on Barrett Parkway in south Cobb County has failed to get a waiver from that ordinance.

The pastor of Pine Grove Baptist church, Rev. Bobby Wood, tells WSB's Richard Sangster, "the law's the law, and Walmart knew when they built the store six years ago the store was only 237-feet from the church's property line."

Walmart asked county commissioners for a distance waver; the request was denied by a vote of 4-1.

Walmart spokesman Glen Wilkins says the store's staff has "never had a customer thanking them for not selling beer and wine at the store."

"This is a case where government is deciding winners and losers," says Wilkins, "and they're being negatively impacted by that."
