Chimney fire leaves family of six homeless in Lilburn

By Daphne A. Young

A family of six in Lilburn is without a home tonight after fire seriously damaged their two story house.

Fire crews found heavy smoke and fire coming from the home's chimney and attic area when they arrived.

Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the two adults and four children will be needing assistance from Red Cross.

Fire officials say the chimney had been in use just before the blaze started, but the smoke detectors went off to alert the family.

The Gwinnett County Department of Fire and Emergency Services is encouraging all residents who use their fireplace this winter to make sure the flue and chimney are properly cleaned prior to use.  Fire officials also say be sure your smoke detectors are working and batteries are fully charged.
