Celebratory gunfire prompts warning from police

Gwinnett County —

As trial is set to begin this week in the case of a Norcross man and his stepson accused of killing their neighbor with celebratory gunfire, the dangers of shooting off guns during celebrations is prompting a new warning from police.

“It’s very difficult for the police especially on major holidays like Fourth of July, New Year’s Eve, Cinco de Mayo, and even St. Patrick’s Day,” says Gwinnett Police Cpl. Jake Smith.

Ervin Turner Sr. and Jesse Deane Foster are accused of firing into the air on New Year’s Eve last year striking and fatally wounding Sergio Martinez who lived one door down.

Each faces up to ten years in prison for involuntary manslaughter.

Smith says the call volume for police is so high on those holidays, that it’s difficult for them to respond to all of them.

“A lot of them, unless they are actually reported as gunfire, the officer won’t even be sent just because we get too much call volume on those days to actually respond to all of them,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.

Smith is hoping the trial of Ervin and Foster will weigh heavy on people’s minds as the holiday approaches.
