It's taken over four years but the tower cranes are once again moving in Buckhead.

Construction is underway at the Buckhead-Atlanta project, a multiple use development located along Peachtree Street, near Buckhead Avenue and Paces Ferry Road.

The project, which began in 2006 as The Shops at Buckhead, was billed as the "Rodeo Drive" of Atlanta.

But financial difficulties forced construction to halt in April 2009 and the site has been quiet since.

Now workers are back, restarting construction on Parcel C of the development.

"It will have about 80,000 square feet of retail, 15,000 square feet of office and 370 apartments," says Hunter Richardson, Managing Director of Development for OliverMcMillilan.

"The total development will cover six city blocks and include 300,000 square feet of retail, 100,000 square feet of office along with the luxury apartment units," says Richardson.

He tells WSB the development has been redesigned from it's original plans and now features high end retail shops, restaurants and street cafes.
"One of the things we've done is try to create a very walkable urban environment," says Richardson, "that is very pedestrian friendly."

The new plans are the work of multiple designers, each drawing on their own experiences and taking their cues from other urban projects in other cities.

Richardson expects the first part of construction, Parcel C, to be completed by the beginning of next year.  The entire development should be open by 2015.
