Baby whale dies at Georgia Aquarium

By Andrew Spencer

The baby begula whale born at the Georgia Aquarium on Friday has died.

"The young whale calf that we had been caring for in critical care ... passed [Wednesday] morning," says Chief Zoological Officer William Hurley with the Georgia Aquarium.

The whale had been significantly underweight and suffering from several medical problems since the full-term birth, Friday evening.

"She was fed her formula," says Hurley, "and she was swimming with some of her care-givers and -- quite unexpectedly -- stopped breathing during some of her swimming."

The whale's death is not entirely unexpected. First-time pregnancies among marine mammals are often unsuccessful in human care and in the wild. The Georgia Aquarium says odds of the calf's survival increase with each successive pregnancy.

"It's difficult to measure our grief, right now," says Hurley. "Our hearts are broken. We're very sad."
