Police are looking for a former accountant of Peach State Roofing in Gwinnett County accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the company before she was fired.

Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Jake Smith says 37-year-old Summer Payne was told earlier this year she would be fired after failing to pay $100,000 in state taxes on the company’s behalf.

When she was kept on for several more weeks to train her replacement, Smith says she created a fake employee named “Pedro Perez” and deposited those paychecks into her own account.

“This seems like a disgruntled employee specifically targeting her employer, not part of any kind of ring or anything like that,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.

Smith says it wasn’t until months after her firing that a forensic accountant discovered that nearly $6,000 was missing.

When police went to Payne’s last known address in Winder, the house was vacant.

Payne is facing a felony charge of theft by deception.
