An 8-year-old was killed Saturday night after being hit by a pickup truck in Carrollton's Adamson Square.

The Carroll County coroner identified the victim as William Randall Garrett, of Carrollton.

Police told Channel 2's Carl Willis that William was walking near a crosswalk on Newnan Street when he was hit just before 8 p.m.

Witnesses in the square were stunned by the accident. Waitress Kayla Frashier said she saw the victim's family as they left Italian restaurant La Trattoria on the square.

"I'd seen the family just pass by right in front," she said. "Happy family just walking along."

Moments later, a pizza box, a bag of takeout food and a child's shoe were scattered across Newnan Street.

"It all happened so fast, and I turn around and there's a little boy laying in the street," said Frashier.

William was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after.

Carrollton police said the driver stopped and was cooperative with investigators. They're still trying to piece together the moments leading up to the accident.

"We don't know if everyone was attempting to cross at a go light or if the child darted out," said Carrollton Police Department Capt. Jamison Sailors. "We're not sure. That's what we're trying to find out."

Police said the family was too shaken up to give a statement Saturday.

Frashier said those who witnessed the incident grieve right along with the victim's family.

"It's just something you don't see every day," she said. "It's just sad."

Police told Willis they do not believe alcohol was involved in the case.
