Some Georgia sheriffs are joining a national movement opposed to federal legislation to ban certain semi-automatic guns and high capacity magazines.

Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison became the first one in the state to write a letter expressing his intent not to enforce any federal ban.

While the Georgia Sheriff’s Association has not yet taken an official stance, Executive Director Terry Norris tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish sheriffs are not bound by federal law.

“They’re constitutional officers.  They’re elected by the folks in their county. They’re independent of supervision from others than those citizens in the county,” he says.

Norris says they also too busy running jails and serving warrants to enforce federal law.

He says the association will meet next week to decide an official position on the proposed legislation.
