The state senate approves a bill to expand gun rights that would allow those living in public housing projects to own a gun.

Sen. Frank Ginn (R-Danielsville) says everyone has a right to own a gun regardless of where they live.

“If you were to move to public housing, would you want your Second Amendment rights to be taken away?” he asked.

But Sen. Vincent Fort worries the measure will thwart efforts to fight crime.

“Isn’t it a good thing to keep firearms out of housing projects especially when we’re trying to prevent crime in those very same projects,” he says.

The bill would also allow those 18 to 21 who are discharged from the military be permitted to carry a gun, and acknowledge carry permits from other states even if those states do not reciprocate.

The bill passed 41-10 and now goes to the House.
