Lawmakers take steps to prevent gun violence

A group of Democratic lawmakers thinks more gun legislation could be the answer to preventing gun violence in metro Atlanta.

Rep. Keisha Waites (D-Atlanta) says they are disgusted with the recent rise in crime including the murder of a Hapeville man in his own driveway, and the shooting involving two students at Price Middle School.

She says the group including House members from Atlanta and College Park met with metro area police chiefs to discuss their concerns and plan to now meet quarterly.

“We feel the pain of the constituents that out there, we are nervous as well, and we’ve made a decision that we must do something on a state level and work with our partners,” says Waites.

Rep. LaDawn Jones (D-College Park) says they will be introducing legislation to require background checks for person to person sales at gun shows, extend the time period for background checks, and tighten mental health restrictions for potential gun buyers.

“We’re not trying to change much other than close a problem that we’ve seen come up and prevent people who are very cunning and very smart and may want a firearm even though they’re not eligible to get one,” says Jones.
