Gov. Nathan Deal says it is too early for him to put his support behind any of the names mentioned as possible candidates for Senator Saxby Chambliss’ seat.

But he says all would be qualified to hold such office.

“I think we’re just fortunate that we’ve have had some really qualified people indicate their interest in the race and (I) think that’s what good for the state of Georgia,” says Deal.

Among those named include former Gov. Sonny Perdue, who polled well in a recent survey by GaPundit.com.  A spokesman for Perdue says he plans to make an announcement Tuesday.

When Deal was asked if he was surprised by Chambliss’ decision not to seek re-election, he said "no", citing Chambliss’ frustrations in Washington.

“Certainly I think he’s done a very good job representing the interests of the state of Georgia and he will certainly be missed,” says Deal.
