A bill to drastically expand where guns can be carried in Georgia easily passes the State House.
The measure would allow guns to be brought into churches where permission is given by the pastor or administrators, government buildings that do not have security, as well as airports before the security checkpoint.
“Until our government can unconditionally assure our safety, I will fight for your right and my right to protect ourselves and our family,” says Rep. Larry O’Neal (R-Bonaire).
The bill would also allow guns to be carried onto college campuses by permit holders with the exception of dormitories or sporting events. Rep. Scott Holcomb (D-Atlanta) says it is a prospect that does not sit well with him.
“I’m not by nature a worrier, but I worry that the mix of alcohol, drugs, sex, and immaturity on college campuses could be fatal,” he says.
Guns would also be allowed in unsecured parts of the airport and allowances would be made for those who forget to take their firearms out of the briefcase or luggage when they get to security.
Designated school personnel would also be allowed to carry a gun at school if they first receive a carry permit and then undergo approved training.
The bill was amended on the floor of the House to address mental health issues.
Carry permits would be denied to anyone who has been involuntarily committed to a mental hospital or who is overhead by a law enforcement officer making a credible threat to another person within the past five years.
Permits would also be denied to anyone who is found not guilty of a crime by reason of insanity or is deemed mentally incompetent to stand trial.
The bill passed 117-56, mostly along party lines, and now goes to the Senate.
