The man who oversees Georgia's colleges wants them to change the way they operate.

"We can't keep doing the same thing the same old way," says University System Chancellor Hank Huckaby.

Huckaby told the Georgia General Assembly in Athens that classroom space is often wasted at campuses all over the state. Leaving classrooms vacant on Fridays, Saturdays, and especially Sundays, he says, is not an effective use of existing space.

Huckaby thinks colleges aren't "doing an optimal job" making classes accessible to non-traditional students.

"Everybody can't take a class between nine [a.m.] and two o'clock [p.m.]," he says.

The chancellor says Georgia also lags behind other states when it comes to online education.

Not long after he was named Chancellor, Huckaby recommended the consolidation of some colleges and universities across the state. Those plans still await final approval.
