Suwanee, GA —

His sister died of a bacterial infection two weeks ago.  Her bereaved brother tells the Gwinnett School Board, Hannah Rinehart's husband, a high school math teacher at South Gwinnett High, missed the last week of her life because he couldn't take any more sick leave.

David Johnson wants the board to allow other teachers to donate their sick leave in cases like this.

"I know there may not have been anything you have done for her, but on behalf of your 22-thousand employees, that I know Mr. Wilbanks, you want to do what is right, " Johnson said during the school board's regular Thursday meeting.

But Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks insists the current system is fair.  Johnson says his next step may be to get state lawmakers to act.

The Gwinnett Daily Post reports that a spokesperson with GCPS has said that human resources did offer Mark Rinehart other options, but he declined.
