DeKalb parent not confident in school board

Dekalb County, GA —

Jennifer Hatfield said she is worried for the future of her two children and she does not think incoming Superintendent Michael Thurmond will be able to do much to allay her concern.

"The governor said the issue is not with the superintendent," Hatfield explained after Friday's tumultuous school board meeting. "He said it's with the board."

Hatfield and other parents who spoke with WSB's Pete Combs after the meeting said they are fed up with the drama and in-fighting among school board members, calling it all a distraction and a threat to their children's education.

"The stakeholders in this county have very little faith in the leadership abilities of this board," she said.

The State Board of Education will conduct another hearing on the fate of the DeKalb School Board on February 21. As a result of that hearing, which will be conducted like a trial, state school board members, acting as a jury, could decide to recommend to Governor Nathan Deal that he sack the entire DeKalb school board.

Hatfield said she believes that is the only viable option that remains.

"The state's recommendation should be to suspend the entire board," she said, although she did not rule out the possibility of allowing some individual members to return.
