Authorities say it wasn’t just a single crash that killed three people early Wednesday morning on I-75 near Cartersville.

“Normally, it would have been just one crash with two fatalities,” said Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright. “But just by the series of events, it was… two crashes with three fatalities.”

It all started when a northbound 18-wheeler hit an overhead sign post and burst into flames. Two people in that truck were killed, Wright said. The sign fell onto the road and another truck hit the wreckage. The driver of the second truck was also killed.

What caused the northbound truck driver to lose control remained a mystery.

“We may never know exactly what caused the driver to veer out of the travel lane and into the guardrail,” Wright said.

Only one victim has been identified so far. He’s Hugh Duling III of Powder Springs.

Wright says the other two victims were also residents of the metro area.
