I-75 closed for nine hours after deadly crash

By Mark Alewine

A Cobb County man was killed in a fiery wreck on I-75 southbound in Bartow County that forced crews to shut the interstate down for more than nine hours.

Scott Thurmond, 54 of Kennesaw, was traveling northbound on I-75 around 3:30 p.m. Sunday when he lost control of his pickup truck near Canton Road. Thurmond crossed the median and slammed into a tractor-trailer driven by Raymond Thomas, 45 of Indiana, in southbound lanes, a trooper with the Georgia State Patrol Said.

Thomas was hauling plastic bags. His big rig immediately caught fire and burned until early Monday morning. Firefighters could only wait until the fire burned itself out.

“Because we don't have the water supply here on the interstate,” Battalion Chief David Levey told Channel 2 Action News. “Also if we put water on (the fire) it's going to cause runoff and that runoff could go to waterways and become toxic."

Fire crews were able to keep the flames contained to the side of the interstate. The backup on I-75 stretched for 16 miles.

The state patrol is investigating the wreck. Right now they are not sure what caused Thurmond to lose control of his pickup. Thomas was burned in the wreck.
