FAIRBURN —

The strong storms that rolled through metro Atlanta Sunday night played a role in a crash on I-85 in south Fulton County that killed a man and his wife.

Demond Sterling Calhoun, 43, and Constance Favors Calhoun, 28, died when their GMC Envoy hydroplaned in the heavy rain and struck a pole on I-85 near the Fayetteville Road overpass. Another passenger is in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital.

“It’s still under investigation,” Fairburn police Sgt. Charles Israel told Channel 2 Action News. “There’s a possibility the vehicle was cut off by another vehicle causing the vehicle to spin out.”

Witnesses told police a newer model car, possibly a Pontiac, cut off the Calhouns and caused them to lose control. The accident happened around 6:30 p.m. and the interstate was not reopened until about 9 p.m.

Strong winds, hail and lots of lightning also accompanied the storms that started hitting metro Atlanta just before 7 p.m.

The National Weather Service said hail 1 inch in diameter hit Kennesaw, Marietta, Powder Springs, Lithia Springs and Jasper.

The winds also knocked down a tree on Houze Road in Roswell.

WSB meteorologist Kirk Mellish says there is more rain to come to start this work week.

Mellish is calling for a 40 percent chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm Monday with high temperatures in the low 80s. The rain chance goes up to 60 percent on Tuesday with highs still in the low 80s.

Mellish calls for highs to back off in the upper 70s by Wednesday with a 30 percent chance of a thunderstorm. Low temperatures will be between 53 and 57.
