MONROE —

The 32-year-old home invader who was pepped with bullets by a pistol-packing mother in Loganville was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison for his trouble.

Paul Ali Slater, 32, barley survived the five gun shots he took from the 37-year-old woman. Tuesday he pleaded guilty to burglary charges and was sentenced by a Walton County judge to 20 years, with 10 to serve. Aggravated assault charges against him were dropped as part of a plea deal.

Slater admitted in court that he thought the home was empty.

He found out very quickly it wasn’t.

The mother and her 9-year-old twins hid in an attic crawlspace while Slater made his way through their home. When he found the family, mom opened fire.

“Shoot him, shoot him again,” her husband told his wife, while he was also on the phone with a 911 dispatcher.

The woman fired six shots from her .38 automatic revolver. She missed once. The other five bullets punctured Slater’s lungs, liver and stomach. He was released from a local hospital in February and transferred to the Walton jail.

Investigators believe Slater confronted the woman, who would become a hero to gun rights advocates, after overhearing her talking on the phone to her husband.

“I was there to steal,” Slater told the Walton County sheriff.

Slater stumbled away from the house, but made it as far as a neighbor’s fence, where he crashed his car.

The Gwinnett resident was released from jail there in late August after serving six months for simple battery and three counts of probation violation. Slater has six other arrests in Gwinnett dating back to 2008, according to public records.
