A Henry County police officer was killed after being run over by a hit-and-run driver Monday night. The officer had pulled over to help a man who had run out of gas.

The officer’s name has not been released.

The hit-and-run happened around 6:40 p.m. near the Starlite Skate Center at 3710 North Henry Blvd. Another person had also pulled over to help. The suspect hit both victims and kept going, police said.

“I was standing behind the car; they were standing on the side of the car,” the stranded motorist Gordon Jarrett told Channel 2 Action News. “I was waving traffic away from them, next thing I know there was two bodies going through the air.”

The suspect is believed to be driving a Ford F-250 pick-up truck. The vehicle is between the 1997-2008 model years.

“There should be damage to the front or driver side portion of the truck,” Henry County police Major Jason Bolton told News/Talk WSB.

Along with the damage to the driver’s side, police think the side door mirror is missing.

The suspect kept driving and continued eastbound on Ga. 138 toward Rockdale County.

Both victims were taken by ambulance to Atlanta Medical Center with serious injuries, police said. The other victim’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Investigators remained at the crash scene for several hours Monday night. Anyone with information about the hit-and-run driver is asked to contact Henry County police.
